One of my favorite teachers once told me that he had Dog Envy. He was recalling a time when he had found a student seated outside of his classroom, crying. Doing his best to comfort her, he pulled out all of his most reassuring words, struggling to find the right tone and phrases to put away her tears. When it was apparent that he'd consoled her as much as he possibly could, he walked her to the door.

At that moment, someone's dog leapt up and started licking her face. Almost immediately, the girl started laughing. "Here I was, trying to give her this long-winded speech and getting nowhere," my teacher remembered. "I wish I could have been that dog!"
